What an unfinished project can teach you.
Reflective practice
Not every valuable learning experience ends with a finished product. A project that changes direction or stops can still help you understand your judgement, technical approach or ability to work with others.
Describe the project’s purpose and the point at which it changed. Identify what you personally did and what became clearer through the work. Avoid presenting an intended result as an achieved one.
Consider the decisions you would make differently with the knowledge you now have. Perhaps the scope needed to be narrower, a key assumption needed testing earlier or the team needed a clearer way to raise concerns. Be specific about the lesson.
When discussing the experience with an employer or educator, explain its relevance to their question. Reflection can show thoughtful learning, but an unfinished project may not demonstrate every capability required for a formal purpose. Follow the receiving organisation’s guidance about the evidence it needs.
